Jeff King: “To Try Men’s Souls” is the name of the newest novel by former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich. The onetime third most powerful man in America was on Maui last Friday night for what has become something of a semianual tradition of new book releases and book signings. A crowd of nearly 150 crammed into Borders, not so much to hear about the new book, which is a fascinating retelling of Washington’s crossing of the Delaware, but to see if Gingrich might consider writing another document along the lines of his “Contract with America.” But Gingrich insists he’s still author “Gingrich” and not candidate “Gingrich.” Newt Gingrich: No, I think you’re seeing more of a genuine national concern that people express everyday now, about whether it’s the economy, or terrorism, or how radical the administration is in Washington. And so, as a citizen, I think I’m responding more to that level of intensity. But I don’t think of it as being a candidate—I think of it as a citizen-leader trying to help explain where we are and what we have to do to be successful. Jeff King: Callista Gingrich also signed copies of her re-released version of Newt’s original book, “Rediscovering God in America.” And we asked her why the book was redone. Callista Gingrich: We wanted to put out a revised edition with beautiful photography. And for the past two years, I’ve taken a number of pictures throughout our nation’s capitol. And so this was a chance to edit the book and to lay it out in a slightly different manner, and to share beautiful color photography with people who may not have ever been to our nation’s capitol. So it was a nice project to do together. Jeff King: Don’t be surprised to see the Gingrich’s back on Maui next spring- that is when Newt’s latest book is expected to be ready for release.
